I don’t spend too much time at home in front of the T.V., but when I do, you can bet I’m binge-watching some of my favorite shows. Since I’m never home to catch shows when they actually air, I’m always playing catch-up, which is kind of perfect since my boo and I love to take Netflix & Chill to another level (get your mind out the gutter!). We’re always stocked up with our wine, the best snacks to munch on (white cheddar popcorn is the bomb!) and the comfiest blanket that lets us both snuggle up so tight.
I usually have shows saved on my DVR, or head over to Netflix or Hulu to watch my favorite shows on demand. I’m making my way through a handful, but I’ve definitely got my top 3.
Dear White People.
I know you’ve heard of this one! It’s been around for quite some time, but because I’m always a skeptic when a show is overly-hyped, I give time for the hype to die down before I give it a shot. To my surprise, Dear White People stayed being discussed up and down my Twitter feed. The title is an attention-grabber for sure, and the show is exactly what you think it is, times 10!
It’s based on a college campus, and Netflix nailed capturing the college experience. They really out did themselves when they created this show. The actors are so bomb, and the main character is my favorite. Samantha (Logan Browning) is mixed, sooo pro-Black, and doesn’t know how to break it to her friends that she’s dating a white guy. She’s got a brand to protect, and the image of the pro-Black activist who calls out white people on the daily just might be tarnished if the school learns she’s in bed with one of them. There’s SO much to the story, including so-called “sell-outs”, protests…I mean, it captures the time we’re living in so perfectly. Okay, okay, if you’re one of the 10 people on Earth who haven’t watched, let’s watch together! I’m so hooked, so I’ll be binge-watching this weekend and hope to finish. *fingers crossed*
Power.
*sings* They say this is a big rich town….yeahhhhh….I just come from the poorest part! Y’all, my stomach DROPS every time I hear the theme music for Power. It’s. Just. That. Good.
When I first discovered Power back in 2015, I literally stayed up til 5am binge-watching the whole first season. I came into work the next day with Louis Vuitton luggage under my eyes, but didn’t care because I was hooked from beginning to end, and couldn’t wait for the next season to drop. 50 Cent and his team definitely did the damn thing when they created this show. Smart, well-dressed, calculated drug dealers that literally get away with murder, and one of them is so good they have a Federal Agent covering for them? Like, talk about next level! My crazy travel schedule caused me to miss my drama-filled Starz Sundays with Power, so now I’m in binge-watch mode. When I finish, I don’t know how I’ll be able to make it until next July. *wall slide*
Insecure.
Three words: Issa. Freakin. Rae. Like, I just want to be her best friend, y’all! (Did I ever tell you guys that we stayed at the same hotel during Essence this year?! She snapped a picture with me and my girls, and I just wanted to apply for her girl squad right then and there!) When it comes to her show, Issa always delivers, and I’m so excited to see where her and Nathan go this season. I don’t want to ruin it for those who haven’t caught up, but let’s just say, the men on this show STAY on their BS! UGH! He’s handsome and has her thinking outside of the box, so I’m just hoping things work out. Okay, okay, I won’t ruin it for you guys, but you’d better spend this week binging.
I’m also on my documentary kick, currently making time for “Amy” and Iris Apfel’s documentary on Netflix. Allen Iverson and Lebron James’ docs are also some of my faves. I could literally watch them over and over. Next on my list is Quincy, the Quincy Jones documentary that just dropped on Netflix last weekend and ALREADY has rave reviews. Love me some Quincy…he’s the GOAT.
What are some of your faves? Winter’s around the corner…I’m ready to grow my list!
Until next time,
MC
I have a few that I’m really enjoying right now… Here are my top 3 at the moment, no particular order. 1. Greenleaf on OWN. This season has been crazy! 2. Bodyguard on Netflix. My husband and I recently got into this and it’s really good so far. 3. Love Is… on OWN. I just love this show! The season is over but I think I’m going to re-watch it over the holidays. Honorable mentions: black-ish, This is Us, Married to Medicine and Real Housewives of Atlanta.
