Hey, Mel’s Mob! You know I’ve always got projects up my sleeve, but this one I was SO proud to work on. This one really tugged at my heart strings. These past few months, I’ve been constantly thinking of ways to give back to my community. We’re going through so much and are bombarded with so much negativity, so I’ve made it my mission to push a little more love and light into this world! When Lowe’s reached out to me about giving back to my community by surprising a local neighbor, you know I jumped at the opportunity! Lowe’s really helped make my house a home when they sponsored my backyard redesign, so to be able to pay it forward to a neighbor was a no brainer for me.

Check out a few before images.

Isa and I were proud to redesign the front porch for the Richardson family! India Richardson is full-time nurse who has been working tirelessly during the pandemic, on top of being a caring wife and mother. That’s not all, y’all; she’s also wrapping up school to become a Nurse Practitioner. Talk about SUPER MOM! Isa and I wanted to create a space where the family could enjoy themselves and even rock their beautiful daughter to sleep in the nice fall breeze.

The Richardson family is originally from Charleston, South Carolina, so we knew we wanted rocking chairs to be the focal point of the porch. If you’ve ever been to South Carolina, you know that rocking chairs mean so much to many families there; the front porch is the hub of many homes. It’s where families and neighbors can connect with each other, and from morning to night, you’ll see granny or grandpa rocking away. It’s a beautiful “tradition”, so I wanted to bring that piece of southern living to The Richardson’s home. Lowe’s had several options for us to choose from, and after Isa and I went back and forth for 20 minutes we finally decided on the black one. We thought a nice runner rug with pops of fall colors would also set the porch off and give it another layer of personality! Lowe’s had so many fall inspired porch décor options to choose from which made it even more fun. How cool are the “Happy Fall, yall” pillows?!

On top of that, we also decided to DIY a new welcome sign for the family. For under $50 bucks, we got the job done with a piece of plywood, wood stain, some white paint, and stencils! After letting the wood stain dry for 2-3 hours, the rest of the project may have taken us 45 mins. So…how did we do?

You know I’m all about my plants lately, so to set the fall mood, we gave them two new plants of their own. We also upgraded their door mat and added lanterns for those crisp fall nights! The space couldn’t have turned out more perfect, and we think the family was just as happy with the results!

The feeling I get every time I’m able to help or give to others is indescribable.  It felt so good knowing that when the Richardson’s get home after a long day, they can relax, connect, and make memories on their new front porch. We were able to put a smile on their faces, and THAT’S what it’s all about!

Here are a few tips when taking your outdoor space from Summer to Fall

  • Always get your measurements beforehand. You want to know exactly how much space you’re working with.
  • Add in some sort of fall inspired DIY project so you’ll have a story to tell for years to come.
  • Pick one main color and build around that. A nice brunt orange or burgundy makes a space pop and screams, FALL HAS ARRIVED!
  • Enjoy yourself! Don’t let this stress you out. This redesign is supposed to be fun! It’s YOUR home.
  • Set a budget. There are so many ideas on items you can buy, but make sure you know exactly what your budget is so you can enjoy your home without breaking the bank.
